Tree of Life with Amber

Image Title: Tree of Life with Amber

Dimensions: 12"x12", 2004

Medium: Raku fired ceramic mounted on canvas painted in acrylic with text

The "tree of life" symbol reminds me that many of life's blessings are there for the picking. But sometimes we are absorbed in other things and don't see them. We allow negativity to swallow our days and haunt our nights, robbing us of what is good in everyday life. It takes real effort to recognize the miracles in our midst.

Working in clay brings me closer to the earth. I love its tactile nature and the range of possibilities it offers. My sculptures are deliberately simple and fired in a method that values spontaneity. As amber is the sap of ancient trees, I wired this piece with it to symbolize
the past living on in our present
.

The text on the canvas behind the tree is automatic writing,
praising trees for their beauty and nurture.
When we come to see ourselves as part of nature —
and not its master —
we will more readily answer the call to heal our wounded world.
